WRESTLING IN 1976
After my strong performance lase year, I have, in a burst of overconfidence, added two new features to this report. First “AA” results will be forecast with the same assurance and lack of doubt as “AAA”, and I will develop a Top Ten format for the best tournament teams in Ohio.
I believe that the “AAA” tournament will be extremely close with at lease a half dozen teams having a good shot of winning. In “AA” one team will dominate the state meet and win by about 20 points.
98#
Projected Champ: Tony Munoz (Fremont Ross)
Top Contenders:
Jim Watson (Clayton Northmont)
Bob Cohen – (Cleveland Hts.)
Munoz, after finishing second to LaScala last year, should take the title quite easily in 1976. After Mark Essi moved up to 105# right before Christmas it became evident that there was no one left who could seriously challenge Munoz. Actually, 98# is a relatively weak weight class this year so that a strong wrestler like Munoz will appear to be a superstar. Particularly since he is a very aggressive wrestler always working for the fall. He had 24 pins last year, and flattened every opponent on his way to winning the Rogers Tourney this year.
Watson is a solid wrestler who should finish 2nd while Cohen, a junior, will also place high. It’s hard to see either of these top contenders, though, giving Munoz a real battle.
Other possible place winners outside the Cleveland area are Wayne Lemley (Col. Northland), Rick Reardon (Cincy LaSalle), Ron Duncan (Fairfield), Tony Leonino (Akron North), and possibly John Selman (Mansfield). I would rate Reardon and Lemley as the best of this quintet.
In Cleveland, Frank Cseh (Normandy) follows Cohen with Rick LaScala (Maple Hts.), Doug Jones (Midpark), and Dan Stefancin (St. Ignatius) further behind. Glenn Dunn (VF) can no longer make the weight which eliminates a potential contender. John Mahnke (Rhodes) a rapidly improving sophomore in a dark-horse to make the State Tourney.
105#
Projected Champ; Mark Essi (Lakewood)
Top Contenders:
Bob Cerankopsky (St. Joe)
Rick Reichard (Canton South)
Willie Senquiz (Southview)
Dave Smith (Galloway Westland)
This is an exceptionally competitive weight with no one wrestler standing out. Ken Miller, the defending state champ, wrestled some bouts at this weight in December, but as I understand it has decided to compete at 112#. This complicates the choice here, but I’ve gone with 2-time Brecksvilie champ Essi because he is experienced, makes few mistakes, and is good on his feet. However, he is a very small 105#.
Who can forget Cerankosky’s epic struggle with Essi In last year’s district semi-finals which he won 3-3, 8-7 OT, and he could well beat him again this year: He has a big height advantage on Essi and is very smooth. First-round jitters cost him his first bout at the State, but he should be over that by now.
Senquiz is the strongest 105# and if he puts together a good weekend at Columbus he could win, but somehow I think he’ll be “outslicked” by someone. Reichard is just now coming off a serious injury that kept him out of competition until January 15. But, if he is healthy, he can be dynamite.
There are two darkhorses at this weight who deserve attention. Dave Smith (Galloway Westland) has been injured, but he defeated Cerankosky last year and cannot be overlooked in 1976. Jay Beiter (Mayfield) is very erratic but has the potential to defeat any wrestler at this weight. However, I doubt he can put four good matches together, but his first round opponent had better watch out.
Fred Mahnke (Rhodes), Phil King (Reynoldsburg), and Mark Smith (Akron Garfield) are all returning state qualifiers with excellent credentials. They, too, could do well and this indicates the depth to be found at this weight. Other contenders from outside of Cleveland might be the rapidly improving North Canton champ Don Hernan (Fitch), Scott McLean (Worthington), powerful Gary McDermid (Centerville), and the aggressive Ed Wohlwender (Cincy St. X.). Glen DeNeis (TSF) has quit the team but Toledo still has Jess Heidleberg (Fremont Ross) and Rollie Mann (Whitmer).
I like, in Cleveland, Chris Linn (Bay) and Gary Smith (Midpark). These two boys given a good draw could make Columbus and do well even there. Mike Deane (Rocky River) and Mike Elinsky (St. Ed) are also good but perhaps too conservative, Once they fall behind they can’t seem to score enough to get back into a match. This will probably doom their chances.
112#
Projected Champ: Ken Miller (Sandusky)
Top Contender: Roger Escolas (Galloway Westland)
The tall rangy Miller beat Escolas 9-7 in last year’s semi-final and went on to easily win the state title at 105#. I believe that, again, these two should fight it out for the crown. Miller should win again because
of his great mat skills, but I think he might be beaten by a good takedown artist who refuses to go to the mat with him. Unfortunately for Escolas, he, like Miller, is primarily a mat wrestler.
Cleveland has many good 112#’s but no outstanding ones. I like Matt Oddo (St. Ed) and Billie Burke (Mentor) the best, but for opposite reasons. Burke because he makes few mistakes and Oddo because he is so aggressive and just keeps “pushing” his opponent until he collapses. I think Oddo, a sophomore, will be a state champ before he graduates. Duane Hoover (VF), Preston Rocco (No. Royalton), Mike Russo (St. Joc), and Wayne Samples (West Geauga) all have a chance to go to Columbus, but I see no way for defending “AA” champ Tony Constantino (Orange) to make the trip. Ellmer Velez (Southview) and Rick Roman (Berea) are dark-horse candidates.
Downstate U. of C. champ Brad Woodall (Fairfield), Gary Hightower (Mansfield), and Kevin Breidenbach (Lima Shawnee) are all good but only one of the last two will po to Columbus because they and Miller all must come out of the two-man Toledo District. Also from Toledo are Mike Cerveny (Whitman), Andy Rush (St. John), and Greg Cousino (TSF) which gives some idea of the strength of that weight there.
Akron has three fine 112#’s with John Franks (Tallmadge) being the best. Dave Gruver (Ravenna) and Dave Wenger (Copley) a good consistent wrestlers who should return to Columbus. They’ll be challenged though by Jim Dugan-Fitch.
119#
Projected Champ: Dan Chinn (Grove City)
Top Contenders:
Jeff Woo (E-N)
Jim Polomsky (Midpark)
Bill Walsh (NO)
Scott Pancoast (Ind. Hills)
This is a dynamite weight once again and as I did last year I’ve got to go with Chinn. He just doesn’t make mistakes and he always wins the close matches. The three Cleveland contenders all placed at Columbus last year, but I vote Woo as the strongest of the three. Walsh, on the other hand, has been erratic, and Polomsky seems flat. However, wrestlers from Midpark and North Olmsted tend to come on strong at tournament time.
Pat Bracci (Park Hills) is a good darkhorse candidate with few credentials but terrific wrestling skills. Jeff Hatchett (Withrow) and John Coffaro (Elder) are also strong in the southwest section of the state.
Chris Sutton (TST) quit the team and unless he returns Mike Stephens (Rogers) should win that district. Eric Kronk (Sylvania) might be a longshot choice there.
Bob Donadeec (Fitch) is a legitimate state contender and should win the Akron District. He, like Bracci, is unknown but very strong. He took Polomsky into overtime before losing the North Canton title. Anzivine
(Nordonia) is also a contender from that district.
In Cleveland, Dan Feldesy (St. Id), Ray Storzo (Berea), and John South (Euclid) will probably battle for that fourth qualifying spot. In a normal year any of them could legimately hope to be District Champ but this year two of them won’t even get to Columbus. A solid dark-horse candidate is Madison (Elyria) who is rapidly improving and seems poised for a late season rush.
126#
Projected Champ: Rick Deubel (Maple Hts.)
Top Contenders:
Jimmy Edwards (Galloway Westland)
Bill McNulty (St. Eds)
William Jones (JFK)
This is not a particularly strong weight in 1976, particularly after just reviewing 119#. I pick Deubel because he is an all-around good wrestler with the guts of a burglar. Edwards and McNulty are both flashy, but I question whether they can put together four consistently good bouts. Jones has not wrestled up to potential so far and I wonder whether he is having weight problems. When he is “right” he can be sensational as witness his 7-3 victory over Drenik last year.
Downstate only Ron Teeter (Withrow), Brad Neal (Start), and Tom Coffing (Lakota)–if he is at this weight–spark any interest, Teeter and Coffing both placed at Columbus last year, but I just don’t see them doing that well this year. Mark Fooksman (Centerville) might have a chance somewhere. Tony Codner (Nordonia), Wayne Peel (Stow) and Dave Koly (Akron North) are just average wrestlers who will have to do better to place in Columbus.
In Cleveland Mike Scaperato (VF), Gary Gilmore (Bay), and Jim DePolo (NO) all could do well but each has a history of losing the big bout. A possible contender Dave Biada (VF) has quit that team. Patton (Midview) is a long-shot threat.
132#
Projected Champ: Greg Drenik (Wickliffe)
Top Contenders:
Ben Benalcazar (Upper Arlington)
Mark Mathias (Toledo Start)
Dave Koch (Padua)
Again, this is not a real strong weight, but like 126# it should be competitive. However, Drenik should take the title. Benaleazar, Mathias, and Koch are all quick and strong and the luck of the draw should determine exactly where they place.
Tim Welch (St. Ed), Ed Mason (Parma), and Dennis Langer (Mentor) are second-line Cleveland choices with Welch being the best of the lot.
Downstate Tom Mitchell (Worthington), Reid Moeler (Xenia), and Greg Burns (Cincy LaSalle) are about the best of the rest. Joe Torti (TSF) has looked bad so that Ray Williams (Sandusky) may get the second qualifying spot out of that area.
138#
Projected Champ: Lou Joseph (Midpark)
Top Contenders:
Maurice Stewart (Garfield Hts.)
Brad Stough (Norton)
This is really a good weight. Only 119# is as strong and contains as many good wrestlers. I’m going with a long-shot when I pick Joseph to win it all. Most people will probably go with state runner-up Stough or semi-finalist Stewart when examining this weight. However, Stough has been hurt and Stewart may be just a shade behind Joseph this year. Besides nobody has pushed Joseph yet and he has the potential to be tremendous.
I also like Dan Rittberger (Brush), Jim Kalin (Strongsville), Tom Gagliardi (Madison), and Randy Verdi (Willoughby South)–and that’s just for openers in Cleveland. Rittberger went to the State last year but has been erratic so far this year. Kalin was one match from Columbus last year and is better now. I’m probably going to regret not making him a top contender, but I still don’t think he has a solid takedown. Gagliardi is going to be sensational some day and it might just be in March. Verdi is just plain tough and mean. A tremendous dark-horse candidate is Mike Griswold (NO) with loads of potential but few victories, while Frank Ray (Cleveland Hts.) is a good journeyman wrestler who somehow might get to Columbus.
In Columbus, Gary Baisden (Galloway Westland) made the state quarter-finals and should do at least as well this year. Rusty Hafer (Vandalia) and Greg Sample (Oakhills) are the best from the Southwestern District and Hafer, in particular, should place. He is very aggressive.
Toledo is not as strong at 138# as other districts but Terry Randleman (Sandusky) and Terry Holmes (Fremont Ross) should do well. They may play a big factor in the team score part of the competition.
145#
Projected Champ: Dan Nole (Reymoldsburg)
Top Contenders:
Ron Sobel (Mayfield)
Paul Silla (Brush)
Jim Byrd (Cincy St. X)
Kip Petroff (Copley)
Nole is the class at what I consider one of the weaker weights in AAA this year. He is strong and experienced and should be well-rested after breezing through his district.
I think Sobel and Silla both have tremendous talent that has not yet completely manifested itself. My feeling is that by the State this latent skill will suddenly mature. There is no doubt in my mind that they are both strong and tough enough.
Right below this duo I would rate Andy Slaman (Bay), Gary Mehalic (Willoughby South), and Mark Johnsen (Brunswick). Sleman is a hard worker while Mehalic is tough. Jolinson could be the “sleeper” in the group. Drelishak (NO) and Vallee (Rhodes) might do well while a healthy Bob Dixon (JM) could get to Columbus.
Petroff is the best in the Akron District while Jim Byrd dominates the Cincy-Dayton area. As of this writing he is 14-0 with 10 falls. Anevski “(Western Hills) may also be good.
Ia Toledo, however, there are four fine wrestlers grasping for but two state berths. Werling should be the favorite but the erratic Tony Jones (Sandusky), strong Jim Kurth (Ragers), and Edwards (Mans Madison) could all beat him out. The two coming out of that district should be battle-hardened.
155#
Projected State Champ: Steve Foley (Worthington)
Top Contenders:
Mike Terry (Brecksville)
Stu Cass (Lakewood)
Kirk Osgood (Rogers)
This is a nice, solid, well-balanced weight class. I’m picking Foley because of his speed and quickness, but those weapons could well be blunted by Terry’s strength. Cass, too, is strong, but rates behind Terry while
Osgood has tremendous potential.
Steve Reedy (Ravenna) second at this weight last year never impresses me, but he continues to win. He will have a big advantage if they continue to use the old, unfair bracketing system which always puts the Columbus, Toledo, and Cleveland champ in the same half of the bracket. Akron champs always get in the other half and so Reedy would be away from Foley, Terry, and Osgood. Popa (Akron North) is also strong in this weight out of the Akron District while Bruce Hinkle (Hubbard) could also be a threat.
Neal Neyer (Cincy LaSalle) who is 9-0 with 8 pins is strong in the Southwest District, but will be challenged by Gary Yewey (Trotwood) and Kyle Maurer (Northmont). This is a strong weight in that area.
Jim Boucher (Sylvania) and Scott Ferguson (TSF) will challenge Osgood in what should be strong competition in that area.
In Cleveland, Cass and Terry will face five principal challengers: Al Fox (Mentor), Rick Mayberry (Conneaut), Brian Nyerges (Bay), Mike Johnson (Brunswick), and Carl Dooley (L-W). The first two are probably
the strongest of this quintet.
167#
Projected Champ: Mike DeAnna (Bay)
Top Contenders: None
Unless DeAnna is injured or on some dark night all of Bay Village slides into Lake Erie we will have our seventh 3-time state champ. There really are no contenders at this weight since we have a champion and a number of wrestlers hoping for 2nd place. If they continue to use the old pairing system contestants in Columbus and Toledo will be working to finish 2nd so that they can get away (at least in the bracket sheets) from Mike.
In Cleveland Daryl Hawks (Maple Hes.) and Gino Perazzolg (Wickliffe) head the remaining contenders with Charles Koz (Lakewood), Tom Seals (Cleveland Hts.), John Zele (St. Joe), and Joe Palmer (Madison) as possibilities. Also watch out for the powerful Ken Agee (JFK) and Dennis Schade (JM) as candidates. If they can harness their enormous strength either one could do well.
John Scalera (Akron North) is just an excellent wrestler who would, in any other year, be a strong choice for the title. He has been wrestling at 175# all year, but weighing in at 167#. If he decides to wrestle at the
lower weight for the tournaments he should take 2nd. Ken Hryck (Copley) should also do well from that area.
Mark McGee (Reynoldsburg), Mark Miller (Col. South), and Jay Greiner (Hilliard) are the best out of the Columbus District but it’s difficult to see any of them grabbing a high place, the same holds true for Mike
Painter (Perkins) and Steve Turnow (Clay) from the Toledo District.
However, out of the Southwest District there could be as many as four good wrestlers. These would include U. of C. Champ Chris Cartheuser (Anderson), Matt Ahearn (Indian Mills), state qualifier Kent Bruggeman (Centerville), and Mark O’Hare (Park Hills). It would not be surprising to see several of
these boys place.
175#
Projected Champ: Ted Kopacko (Midpark)
Top Contenders:
Ted Lucas (Clayton Northmont)
Fred Gutierrez (Cleveland Hts.)
Matt White (Worthington)
You should examine this forecast in the light of recent history, I have never picked the 175# champ correctly since I started these sheets (in 1970). It’s amazing that I can “mess it up” every year. Remember I
picked Schoen over Varga last year. Still it seems likely that I’ve turned the corner with my choice of Kopacks. Fourth at this weight last year as a sophomore, he should do even better this year. Right. Still I keep wondering whether Lucas or White might not be a better choice. Remember White beat Kopacko at the North Canton Tourney and Lucas is a real “bear” who went to Columbus last year. Gutierrez has been so consistent this year I keep wanting to go with him, too. Anyway, c’mon Kopacko.
If this isn’t bad enough there are another half-doze candidates who could win it. I really like John McCafferty (West Tech) but I wonder if he has wrestled tough enough competition to get prepared for the “big boys”. Ken Orth (Northland) and Rusty Kunkle (A-Fitch) are bother tremendous competitors who could claim the title. That Brian Thomas (Centerville) is a real “animal” with a 75 percent ratio of falls. Long-shots might include Jack Coolidge (Fairview) and John Maksym (Rhodes) who if they had a dream weekend might win.
Possible place winners include John Lambert (NO), Ron Sherrill (West Geauga), Dale Maher (Oakhills), and Brian McCully (Madison). Coach John Storey has such a nice touch with big men that Tom Hren (St. Joe) should not be overlooked.
185#
Projected Champ: Rod Barndollar (Newark)
Top Contenders:
John Dombos (Garfield Hts.)
Randy Hambrick (Fairfield)
This is one of the hardest weights to forecast because, like last year, it is very weak. In my opinion this is probably the weight with the fewest good wrestlers. Barndollar is the choice because of his strength and experience. He should win, but he will probably have to win a number of close bouts to do so. Dombos is very strong but has been somewhat erratic. He needs to have a more consistent style to win.
With the above two are returning state qualifiers Matt Whitmer (Whitehall), Randy Hambrick (Fairfield), and Bob Thayer (East Liverpool). None of these guys really thrill me, though. However, Hambrick has to be rated a contender.
Toledo will probably send two of the following three contestants– Luther Henson (Sandusky), Ricky Morris (Rogers), or Nelson Bolder (TSF). Dave Nettles (Park Hills) could be a threat as might Tom Tuttle (Revere). Two underclassmen with great potential are sophomore Mike Trgovac (Fitch) and junior Jerry Lee (Medina). Both boys constantly go for the fall and are very aggressive. They could surprise a lot of folks between now and March 13.
In Cleveland Mark Prchlik (Strongsville), Tom Koren (Brush), Ken Jones (VF), and John Findlay (Southview) are probably state contenders. Tom Tripeppi (Mentor) if he can recover from his injury might also do well,
Actually, the best 185’s I’ve seen this year are Norm Walker from Greenville, Pennsylvania and Bruce Heasley of Bedford, Michigan. Either one would win at Columbus.
Heavyweight
Projected Champ: Tim Payne (NO)
Top Contenders:
Bruce Robinette (Xenia)
Rob King (Bellevue)
Mike Cross (Cincy LaSalle)
We were all undoubtedly spoiled by the great heavyweights that competed last year. This year’s group is not nearly as good. Payne should win, but as always, Heavyweight is a chancy division. One mistake can eliminate even a great wrestler in a big hurry. Still Payne is big and enormously fast with three years of experience, Cross, King, and Robinette are all former state qualifiers who have dominated their geographical area. They should provide some interesting match-ups.
In Cleveland there are a number of reasonably good big men who are difficult to evaluate. Bob Petrus (St. Ig.) is small, but quick. Mike Becoat (Shaw) has good size and speed but makes too many mistakes. Besides he gets down on himself. Bob Tripka (May) is huge but never a winner. Mark Novasel (Euclid) is improving but still untested. My guess is that at least one or two unknowns will go to the State from our district. The competition is that even.
The Akron-Canton area has a number of solid heavyweights including Lee (Akron North), Cheveny (Mass Perry), Barton (Canton South), and August (Boardman). It should be interesting to see how they sort themselves out.
Stan Spencer (Grove City) who Payne destroyed at Brecksville is still the best in the Columbus area followed by Mark Thorton (South). That should give you a good idea of the caliber of heavyweights there.
Jim Smith (Fremont Ross) heads a good Toledo area delegation after King. That also features Randy Hoch (Rogers) and Paul Popke (Perkins).
Sherm Foster (Patterson) and Bob McKillican (FF) are other contenders from the Southwest District.
Teams
The top teams are chosen on the basis of those having the best chance of becoming state champions. This is a difficult year to begin this rating because no one team or teams dominate. As many as a dozen teams could win the title. I do not anticipate high point totals for any team even with the new scoring system.
#1 — Galloway Westland — They have four returning wrestlers who have qualified for a state tourney. In Escolas (112) and Edwards (126) they have possible finalists and Baisden (138) and Smith (105) could place. That two man qualifying district they participate in could hurt them.
#2 — Midpark — I’m amazed that they are not ranked higher in the PD poll. They, for example, are much stronger than Nordonia. I like Kopacko (175) and Joseph (138) as possible champs with Polomsky (119) placing. Jones (98), Smith (103), or Cocita (155) might also qualify for Columbus.
#3 — North Olmsted — A fine tournament team with Payne (hvy) and Walsh (119) leading the way. They need help from Griswold (138), DePola (126), and Lambert (175), though. Their three low weight contestants are improving but probably not fast enough to help.
#4 — St. Edward’s — The team of the future. They’re still young but those first six wrestlers have undeniable talent, They should win in 1977 but maybe next year will come early for Howard Ferguson. I particularly like Oddo (112) and Welch (132). But Dan Foldesy (119), McNulty (126), Elinsky (105), and Don Foldesy (98) all could made Columbus. Of course, some will fall out of the picture, but watch out for the Eagles.
#5 — Sandusky — Miller (112) should win at 112# and Williams (132), Randleman (138), Henson (185), and Irby (119) could score points if they can get to Columbus. Again the pairings in that 2-man district will be
crucial. Erratic Tony Jones (145) needs to help, too.
#6 — Bay — One sure state champ, DeAnna (167), is not enough to take the title. Gilmore (126) and Slaman (145) could help a lot. Also, Linn (105) and Nyerges (155) have an outside chance of going to Columbus.
#7 — Fremont Ross — Again a team with almost a sure champ in Munoz (98). Heidleberg (105), Werling (145), and Smith (hvy) with good draws in the District could get to Columbus to help. Holmes (138) is a dark-horse that could provide points.
#8 — Cleveland Heights — Perhaps not the greatest dual meet team in the world, Heights has four or five wrestlers who could go a long way. Cohen (98) and Gutierrez (175) are outstanding and Webb (132), Roy
(138), and Seals (167) are all good. Unfortunately, Ray and Gutierrez are at real strong weight classes which could hurt their chances.
#9 — Austintown-Fitch — No team from the Youngstown-Warren area has ever made even the slightest threat of winning a state crown. In 1975 this could change as Fitch has a strong, well-balanced team, They
won the tough North Canton Invitational and should be co-favorites (with Akron North) to win their district. Bob Donadee (119) is their “big gun”, but he has the misfortune of being at a tough weight. Dan Hernan (105), Jim Dugan (112), Rich Donadece (132), Rusty Kunkle (175), and Matt Trgovac (185) are other possibilities.
#10 — Maple Heights — Surprise! Maple Heights is having a poor dual meet season, but they still could do well in tournaments. Deubel (126) has to be rated the favorite at his weight and LaScala (98) and Hawks (167) could score. Some of his other wrestlers are improving rapidly and if Mike Hrdy (112) returns, Maple could once more be a factor.
#11 — Cincy LaSalle — The best tourney team in Cincinnati, they are led by Cross (hvy), Neyer (155), Burns (132), Reardon (98), and Trachsel (105).
#12 — St. Joseph’s — A fine well-balanced. team just now beginning to come into its own. If Cerankosky (98) and Zele (167) come through they could easily make the top four.
#13 — Worthington
#14 — Akron North
#15 — Brush
#16 — Toledo Rogers
#17 — Fairfield
#18 — Centerville
#19 — Nordonia
#20 — Cincy Oakhills
Interlude
Having the opportunity to examine many wrestling results has one secondary benefit–it brings me into contact with a lot of strange sounding names. Below are listed some of the most unusual that I’ve discovered so far this season. All of these boys are varsity wrestlers at the weight and school listed:
Oscar Eagle — 112# from Woodridge
Hiawatha Golden — 132# from Columbus West
Mike Fishneck — 145# from Canal Fulton Northwest
Brett Cornstubble — 138# from Ashtabula Harbor
Cheyenne Seneften — 98# from Malvern
Darcy Teets — 112# from Amherst
AA
Clearly, “AA” competition is more difficult to forecast because much pertinent information is just not available. There are many areas in the state (especially where smaller schools predominate) that are not well covered by the media. Thus it is easier not to hear about a top contender and thus be badly fooled at Columbus. Shown below are a projected champ and top contenders based on the information I possess.
