St. Edward Favorite for 38th Championship
The division 1 team race will once again be for the runner-up spot as St. Edward will run away with their 38th state championship. They are currently 50 points ahead of the rest of the field.
However, Massillon Perry and Perrysburg will field nationally ranked, star studded teams, and will, in a repeat of last year’s state tournament, battle it out for the silver trophy. Brecksville will be close behind, ready to capitalize if either should stumble.
#1 St. Edward
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Karson Brown (1st)
Ethan Timar (2nd)
Tyrel Miller (2nd)
Jarrel Miller (2nd)
Adam Butler (2nd)
Khimari Manns (4th)
Aiden Peterson (4th)
Bradley Eaton (6th)
Timothy Mazur (Q)
St. Edward returns 10 starters from last year’s team, 9 of which competed at the state tournament.
They are led by two-time state champion Karson Brown, former state champion Ethan Timar, as well as 4 other wrestlers who reached the state finals this year or last: T. Miller, J. Miller, A. Butler, and B. Eaton.
Manns, Peterson, and Mazur all have state finalist potential as well and will look to improve on their state performances from 2024.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Nate Gregory (3)
Caiden Pirkel (5)
Jared Goldberg (10)
Frank Pieffer (13)
Jack Lentz (13)
Jack Kline (14)
Cooper Driscoll (injured 2024)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Heavyweight Gregory failed to qualify in 2024, but he will be a title contender in 2025 as much of the heavyweight firepower graduated from across the state. Pirkel, Driscoll, Goldberg, and Pieffer will battle it out in the middleweights for spots in the starting lineup. They all have state placement potential.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Conner Whitely (1st)
William Schork (2nd)
Brycen Swiger (3rd)
Andrew Mlynarczyk (5th)
Ryker Leonard (6th)
As always, the Eagles bring in a crop of junior high state placers. We could see one of Whitely, Shork, or Mlynarczyk at 106 while the others will have to wait their turn to crack the lineup.
POTENTIAL LINEUP
106: Connor Whitley (JH 1st)
113: Timothy Mazur (Q)
120: Ethan Timar (1st, 2nd)
126: Karson Brown (1st, 1st)
132: Khimari Manns (4th)
138: Adam Butler (2nd, 5th, 2nd)
144: Kolten Hmel
150: Caiden Pirkel

#2 Massillon Perry
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Landon Johnson (2nd)
Mason Rohr (Q – injured prior to state)
Lincoln Rohr (3rd)
Liston Seibert (3rd)
Marshall Geckler (4th)
Caige Horak (7th)
Emeric McBurney (Q)
Brennan Warwick (Q)
Landon Ristoff (Q)
Mike Millin (Q)
Massillon Perry also returns 9 state qualifiers and will field one of their best teams in school history. They are led by runner-up Landon Johnson, third-place finishers Lincoln Rohr, and Liston Seibert, as well as Mason Rohr who entered the state tournament ranked #2, but was injured days before competition.
Geckler, Horak, McBurney, Warwick, Ristoff, and Millin are all early favorites to make the podium.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Brandon Veno (10)
Cameron Plotts (8)
Joseph Sanderfer (transfer)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Veno and Plotts are good enough to score points at the state tournament, however, they will have to crack the starting lineup first – a tall task in a room full of high caliber middleweights.
The rumor is that Sanderfer will be competing for the Panthers in 2025, and he could score big points at state as well. In any case, they will have a log-jam in the middleweights that will need to be sorted out. A good problem to have for Massillon Perry.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Trace Johnson (2nd)
Xander Horak (2nd)
Samuel Adams (4th)
DeVaughn Williams (4th)
Jr. High runner-ups Johnson and Horak could make immediate impacts if they can crack the lineup. Adams is the likely starter at 106, assuming L. Rohr, Seibert, M. Rohr, and McBurney all move up a weight.
POTENTIAL LINEUP
106: Samuel Adams (JH 4th)
113: Lincoln Rohr (3rd)
120: Liston Seibert (3rd)
126: Mason Rohr (3rd, injured)
132: Emeric Mcburney (6th, 3rd, dnp)
138: Trace Johnson (JH 2nd)
144: Cameron Plotts
150: Joseph Sanderfer (6th, injured)
157: Brennan Warwick (Q)
165: Marshall Geckler (8th, 4th)
175: Landon Johnson (2nd)
190: Caige Horak (7th)
215: Landon Ristoff (Q)
285: Mike Millin (Q)
#3 Perrysburg
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Marcus Blaze (1st)
Grey Burnett (1st)
Cole Evans (1st)
Ayden Dodd (2nd)
Alex Denkins (4th)
Josh Takats (4th)
Brody Bauman (Q)
Shane Saito (Q)
Perrysburg returns 8 qualifiers which includes 3 state champions, a runner-up and two 4th place finishers.
World Champ, and US Senior World Team member, Marcus Blaze is not only the best high school wrestler in the state, but probably the country. Burnett is also a national-level talent and Evans will look to join the elite club of three-time state champions.
Denkins, Takats, Bauman, and Saito should all score points at state next year, putting Perrysburg in contention for their 4th straight runner-up finish. Coach Burnett always has the Yellow Jackets buzzing come March.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Ben Takats (7)
Eric Bush (8)
Ben Sawaya (10)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Ben Takats would likely have placed at state in 2024 if he wasn’t stuck behind Dodd and Burnett. Look for him to fill out his frame and fill a lower-middle weight slot in the lineup.
Upperweights Bush and Sawaya were both a match from state last year and could help their team out by winning a match or two at the state tournament.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Collin Bagdonas (1st)
Urijah Lopez (2nd)
Chase Davis (3rd)
Connor Bagdonas (4th)
Collin Bagdonas will need to put on a little size this offseason (he won the 84-pound class) but should secure the starting 106-pound spot. Lopez, Davis and Connor Bagdonas may be a year out from seeing the lineup, as Perrysburg has the lower weights locked down with superstars.
POTENTIAL LINEUP
106: Collin Bagdonas (JH 1st)
113: Ayden Dodd (5th, 2nd)
120: Grey Burnett (1st)
126: Ben Takats
132: Alex Denkins (4th)

Graham Favored – Watterson on the Rise
Graham will once again have formidable competition in quest to win their 26th overall and 24th straight team championship.
This time their top contender will be Bishop Watterson, an up-and-coming team who returns their entire lineup from last year.
Graham and Watterson are 40-50 points ahead of the next in line, with DeSales, Wauseon, or Buckeye likely to finish in 3rd place.
Note: The OHSAA has yet to release their divisional breakdown for wrestling and some believe Graham will end up in division 3. If that is the case, they will be the heavy favorites to win in the lower division.
#1 Graham
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Brogan Tucker (1st)
Bryce Kohler (2nd)
Blaine Demarco (4th)
Jake Landis (4th)
Chett Mannier (Q)
Micah Krieger (Q)
Danny Hoke (Q)
Graham returns 7 state placers and 3 more state qualifiers, led by Brogan Tucker, who will be vying for his 4th state title.
Runner-up Bryce Kohler could make another state final while DeMarco, and Landis will look to improve on their state performances.
The wildcard is Danny Hoke, who made the district finals last year before defaulting his finals match and was unable to compete at the state tournament. He and Mannier could both be finalists next as the upper weights largely cleared out due to graduation.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Gage Stull (11)
Kaden Marshall (12)
Wyatt Kaemmerer (17)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
The excellent Stull make an immediate impact in 2025 if he can find a slot in the lineup. Marshall is a formidable heavyweight but he will be in a battle with the young Kaemmerer for the starting spot. Either wrestler could produce valuable points for the Falcons at the Schott.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Kyler Crooks (1st)
Gabriel Krieger (3rd)
Jakob Hoke (3rd)
Cooper Breslin (4th)
Ryan Angel (6th)
As always, Graham reloads with a stock of young talent. All five of the aforementioned could see the starting lineup next year and make immediate impacts.
POTENTIAL LINEUP
106: Cooper Breslin (JH 4th)
113: Jake Landis (8th, 4th)
120: Baden Root
126: Gabriel Krieger (JH 3rd)
132: Blaine Demarco (4th)

150: Brogan Tucker (1st, 1st, 1st)
157: Jakob Hoke (JH 3rd)
165: Kyler Crooks (JH 1st)
175: Bryce Kohler (3rd, 2nd)
190: Chett Mannier (Q)

#2 Bishop Watterson
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Michael Boyle (1st)
James Lindsay (2nd)
Neal Krysty (3rd)
Mitchell Younger (4th)
Joseph Curry (5th)
Greyson Conyers (Q)
Watterson returns every starter from last year’s squad that finished 4th at the state tournament. The Eagles have a knack for developing young talent and have now produced a freshman state champion in each of the last three seasons (Younger, Curry, and Boyle).
Runner-up Lindsay and third-placer Krysty both have the talent to win a state title themselves.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
CJ Youell (16)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Watterson is a top-heavy team. Aside from Youell, they have few others with state qualification potential.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Tommy Rowlands (1st)
Thomas Lindsay (4th)
The Ohio wrestling family gets to watch another Tommy Rowlands compete next year and he is just as talented if not more so than his father.
He and Thomas Lindsay are both good enough to place high at state. If Rowlands can stay away from Brogan Tucker’s weight class, he could very well keep Watterson’s streak of freshman champs alive.

#3 St. Francis DeSales
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Lincoln Shulaw (2nd)
Andrew Barford (3rd)
Joel Welch (Q)
Aside form their big three of Shulaw, Barford, and Welch, DeSales has very little firepower to bolster their state tournament trophy chances.
The transfer of Sanderfer to Massillon Perry, and graduation of Shulaw, Lopez, and Rush has the Stallions in a bit of a rebuilding year. Even so, if they push 3 wrestlers to the state finals, it may be enough to finish third behind Graham and Watterson.

Delta’s Case for a D3 Dynasty
About once a decade, we see Delta rise to the top of the D3 landscape. They won their first title in 1989, won three more in the late 90’s, two in the mid-2010’s, and are now the early favorites to win again in 2025.
Currently, they are 30+ points ahead of the field, which is quite a lot when it comes to division 3 – the one division that consistently has competitive team races. With a title in 2025, Delta would tally 7 total team titles, tying them with Sandusky SMCC for most among small school teams.
Wayndeale looks to be Delta’s main competition, but they will need to have a perfect weekend in March if they are to stop the Panthers in their quest in becoming the premier team in division 3 wrestling history.
#1 Delta
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Adam Mattin (1st)
Connor Sintobin (5th)
Landon Lintermoot (7th)
Cass Chiesa (8th)
Tyler Barnes (Q)
Richard Flores (Q)
Lane Lopez (Q)
Parker Cone (Q)
The 2024 Dual Meet State Champions return 4 state placers and 4 state qualifiers. The leader of the team is Adam Mattin who will be gunning for his 3rd state title.
Sintobin and Chiesa are among the few returning upper-weight state placers across the state and should place high in 2025.
Barnes also has potential for high placement – he could even find himself in the state finals if he gets hot at the right time. Lopez is talented and competed well as a freshman middleweight.
Flores and Cone can score points at the Schott and could bolster their team’s chances with podium finishes.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Brady Smith (8)
Daniel Thatcher (10)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Smith is a formidable heavyweight who was a match from state last year. Thatcher is a potential state placer, but will first have to make the lineup, as he is competing in what is shaping up to be a stellar middleweight group.
INCOMING FRESHMAN (Jr High Placement)
Marcus Nagel (1st)
Gunner Taylor (2nd)
Nagel and Taylor are both excellent middleweights who can podium in 2025. Delta’s biggest challenge will be finding spots in the lineup for all of their studs.

#2 Waynedale
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Brock Beckler (4th)
Caden Schmeltzer (5th)
Riley Greathouse (6th)
Stephen Patterson (7th)
Isaak Skelly (Q)
Robert McCrork (Q)
Waynedale returns 4 placers and state qualifier Skelly. However, they all need to move up a spot or two on the podium if they want to have a chance of surpassing Delta.
Schmeltzer may be their best wrestler and I would not be surprised to see him walk away with a state title in his senior season.
Beckler, Greathouse, Patterson, and Skelly are all young and should improve during the offseason. McCrork qualified for state but was unable to compete. I think he would have placed if he was able to wrestle.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Dalton Oberly (8)
Jayden Schlabach (16)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Oberly, as a freshman, was a state alternate at 138 and had multiple wins over state qualifiers. He should do well and vie for a mid-podium spot. Schlabach defaulted out of the sectional tournament last year, but is talented enough to qualify if not place at the Schott next year.

#3 Milan Edison
RETURNING QUALIFIERS (State Placement)
Luke James (1st)
Abe Hermes (3rd)
Xander Gfell-King (6th)
Mason Hermes (8th)
The returning state champions will lose two big seniors in champ Horvath and third-place finisher Medina which knocks them out of contention for a second title. Even still, they are in the hunt for a runner-up trophy with their typical top-heavy team structure (4-5 studs with little supporting staff).
State champion Luke James and previous champ Abe Hermes are the leaders of this team while Gfell-King and Mason Hermes are young and should improve on their state performance from last year.
OTHER CONTRIBUTORS (2025 Rank*)
Cy Finnen (5)
*2025 rank based on end-of-year 2024 rankings with seniors removed
Finnen is talented and rapidly improving. With one more offseason, he should be able to hang with the best 190-pounders in the state and provide valuable team points for the Chargers come March of 2025.
