2024 Freshmen of the Year and All-Ohio Freshman Team

By DubStat on March 14, 2024May 23, 2024

Burnett, Boyle, and Zmorowski named DubStat’s freshmen wrestlers of the year in Ohio

Freshmen of the Year

Division 1: Grey Burnett (Perrysburg)
Division 2: Michael Boyle (Bishop Watterson)
Division 3: Danny Zmorowski (Lake Catholic)

Grey Burnett (Perrysburg)

Grey Burnett won the 113-pound division 1 state championship in a bracket that contained 3 nationally ranked wrestlers and was featured on FloWrestling as one of the toughest state brackets to win in the entire nation. In the finals, Burnett defeated returning state champion, Ethan Timar of St. Edward, by a score of 3-2, avenging a district finals loss.

Grey had wins this year over D2 state champion Blake Bartos of Buckeye, and 2x D3 state champion Adam Mattin of Delta.

With his state championship, Burnett helped lead Perrysburg to their third straight runner-up team trophy.

Grey finished the season as the #1-ranked P4P freshman in Ohio.

Michael Boyle (Bishop Watterson)

Michael Boyle was the lone freshman state champion in division 2 this year. He won the 165-pound title, a weight class typically dominated by upper classmen. In fact, he defeated the returning 6th, 5th, 4th, and 3rd place finishers from last year’s state tournament to claim the gold medal.

With Boyle’s win, Bishop Watterson has now produced a freshman state champion in the past three seasons.

Michael finished the season as the #3-ranked P4P freshman in Ohio.

Danny Zmorowski (Lake Catholic)

Danny Zmorowski finished in 3rd place in the 215-pound division 3 weight class. In his placement match, Danny defeated returning state runner-up, Wyatt Ripke of Archbold, by a score of 6-0, avenging an overtime loss from earlier in the tournament.

Danny was the only freshman 215-pounder to make it to state across all three division this year and the only freshman state placer in division 3 above 157-pounds.

Danny finished the season as the #10-ranked P4P freshman in Ohio.
