After dropping his opening round match at the OHSAA State Wrestling Championships, Alex Taylor ripped off five straight wins to claim third place in the 215 pound division 1 bracket.

Over the last 15 years, only seven freshmen have qualified for the state tournament in the 215/220 pound weight class in division 1. Among them, only four earned a place on the podium.

The last time a wrestler matched Taylor’s accomplishment was in 2009 when eventual three-time state champion, Nick Tavanello of Wadsworth, also placed third as a freshman at 215 pounds.

Taylor finished the season with a 42-8 record.

Joey Curry (Bishop Watterson)

Joe Curry of Watterson won a tough 120 pound bracket in division 2 filled with returning state placers and talented seniors. He took out returning runner-up Ohl (Ontario) in the quarterfinals, then stopped third-placer finisher Ryan (Graham) in the semifinals before taking the title over two-time state placer Moreland (Butler).

Curry finished the season with a 34-2 record.

Tyson Seesholtz (South Range)

Tyson Seesholtz of South Range claimed 4th place in the 150 pound division 3 bracket. His only losses were to a talented Horvath (Edison) in the quarters and again in the third-place match. Seesholtz had impressive wins over state placers Lyons (Tuslaw) and Margraf (Mohawk) enroute to his podium finish.

Seesholtz finished the season with an impressive 51-5 record.
